Significance of Rama Nama

Rama Nama the Name of the Name!

Every other mantra in our scriptures have their own names. Rama Nama is the only Mantra that is called ‘Taraka Mantra’. The word ‘taraka’ means the one that helps us cross. It helps us cross the ocean of ‘samsara’. It helps us cross the cycles of birth and death. If it is chanted as 'Rama', then it is a Nama. If it is chanted 'Ram', then it is a Mantra.

Thus spoke the Sages

Our ancient Sages and Rishis have glorified the Rama Nama. Rama Nama gets exactly the same importance in Saguna Upasana (worshipping the Absolute Truth as a Being with a form) as does the Pranava ('Om') Mantra in Nirguna Upasana (worshipping the Absolute Truth as formless).

Rishi Manu shows that the Rama Nama has links to all the other mantras that ever exist. In Syavana Smriti (Syavana is the name of a rishi), Syavana says that the Rama Nama is the essence of all the Vedas, Shastras, Itihasas and Puranas. Sage Vasishta meditated on the Rama Nama for quite a long time. Hence he wanted to name the Almighty with the same Mantra that he had chanted.

The Yoga Connection
In the philosophy of the Yoga, 'Ra' is considered the 'Mooladhara' (the point of origin of the power of Kundalini) and 'Ma' is the 'Sahasrara' (the destination) . Hence, when the Rama Nama is chanted in the right tone and manner, the serpent power rises and hits the head or the 'kapala' Thus, by merely chanting the Rama Nama, one can become a Yogi.

Shiva's family Mantra
We are all aware of the story of the competition between Ganesha and Muruga on who will get the divine fruit. Muruga, angry that the fruit was not given to him, went to Palani. In order to appease his anger, the competition was conducted again, when Muruga diligently circumambulated his parents on his peacock at great speed. Ganesha, on his part, wrote 'RAMA' on the sand and circumambulated it, as that is equivalent of going around the whole world! Pleased, Siva honoured him by crowning him the leader of all his minions - the 'bhoota ganas' and thus he acquired the name 'Ganapathy' and 'Gana Nayaka' In Vishnu Sahasranamam, Lord Siva asks Parvati to chant the Rama Nama all the time. A good teacher is the one who practices what he preaches. It is obvious that Siva, being the Supreme Guru, (Jagadguru) Himself chants the Rama Nama. When parents do something noble, would not the son follow the same? Muruga and Ganesha chant the Rama Nama always. That is verily their ‘Kula Mantra’.

The Lords' favorite!

The ‘sthala purana’ of Kasi says that the deity Kasi Viswanatha initiates the Rama Nama to each and every being at the time of their death, in their right ear.
The Lord Dhakshinamurthy observes silence because He doesn’t want to waste any time without chanting the Rama Nama.
The Sun God ever chants the Rama Nama as he is proud that Sri Rama came in his dynasty.

The Devatas' favorite

Sage Vishwamitra took Sri Rama and Lakshmana to the forests for 'yagna samrakshana' (protecting their fire austerities from the demons). Out of the boundless love for Sri Rama, Viswamnitra wanted to gift Him something. A sage that he was, he had no worldly possessions, nevertheless, he had performed abundance of austerities. He had penanced for a very long time on the 33 crore 'Devatas' with mantras for each of them. He initiated Sri Rama with these Mantras. As soon as the Mantras were initiated to Sri Rama, the 'devatas' appeared before them! Viswamitra was jealous of the fact that those devatas who could be invoked by him only after severe penances, now appeared the instant Sri Rama chanted their Mantras!

In our Shastras it is prescribed that when the devatas are invited, they can be installed in one of the three -- water (that is the reason we install 'kalas' - pots of water for japa, kumbabhishekam and the like), fire (that is the reason we perform homam) and the third being, installing them into one's own body (during Sandhyavandanam, Godess Gayathri is installed thus). Here, when the devatas were invoked, they refused to go back to their abodes. Hence Sri Rama invited one and all of them into his body. Thus, by merely chanting the Rama Nama, one gets the benefit of invoking all the 33 crores of devatas as well. Ramayana is filled with instances where merely the Name ‘Rama’ has solved so many miseries and disentangled so many situations.

One Name for all Gods

Generally people can be divided into two broad categories: the Shaivites, who worship Lord Shiva as the supreme, and the Vaishnavites, who worship Lord Vishnu and His forms as the the supreme Being. The most significant Mantra for any Vaishnavite is the 'Ashtakshari' (it contains eight letters in sanskrit) mantra 'Om Namo Narayana' .

The chief among the Mantras for the Shaivites is the Panchakshari (5 lettered) mantra, 'Om Nama Shivaya'. Without the letter 'ra', 'Narayana' would read as 'Nayana' that means one without a way ('gati'); without the

letter 'ma', 'Namasivaya' would read as 'Nasivaya' that means inauspicious. So the jiva akshara (life giving letters) 'Ra' and 'Ma' of these two Mantras are put together to form the Rama Nama!

Anyone chanting this Divine Name thus worships both Shiva and Vishnu at the same time.

The e-Sri RamaJayam Campaign

Yesterday I was thinking of something and suddenly struck of this idea. We should try to make the divine use of online word document processings like Zoho Writer and Google Docs for a divine purpose. These days of e-Age and particularly IT people like us are more inclined to getting ourselves clinging onto our computer desktops more than paper, pen and pencil. Everyday writing (rather typing) 100 Sri RamaJayam would benefit the entire world with the blessings of the Lord.

I have initiated this campaign yesterday through my Zoho Writer account. You can find the first set of 100 Sri Ramajayam from me over here. Only the initial publication has been made public. Perhaps we can have the following as guidelines in this campaign. Suggest me changes and/or more additions thereto:

Daily 100 Sri Ramajayams (minimum). It just takes about 7 minutes to type.
DO NOT COPY-PASTE AND TAKE UNDUE HELP OF SYSTEM CLIPBOARD. Every Sri Ramajayam you type makes your finger and body to do service to the Lord. No shortcuts for the same.
Follow the decorum of 'Daily' as much as possible unless your other schedules interfere significantly. Perhaps we can think that it should be part of we taking bath everyday or brushing teeth, eating and/or drinking coffee.
Feel free to use the same template or design your own template. The 'Sri Ramajayam' can be written in your language or in English. I have preferred to write it in Tamil.

repair work due to paucity of funds. Due to lack of maintenance over the years, the temple was in a ruined state. Because of fragile walls and cracked ceiling, rainwater seeped
inside the temple flooding the sanctum sanctorum. The idols were literally surrounded by knee-deep waters and the temple was in a pathetic state last year (2005) during the rainy season. The wetness that was retained in the temple walls, paved the way for fungus formation and plants have grown over it after some months.

On seeing this, a family who lived there for years in the village took the initiative and has taken up the renovation work with their means.The villagers and well-wishers have put in their efforts to get the samprokshanam done recently. The samprokshanam seems to have covered only minimum amount of repair work and they still have a larger number of renovation efforts held back due to paucity of funds. Injimedu is located between Chennai and Polur. The temple is very near the bus stop and localites at the village are very helpful and would be pleased to guide you to the temple. The village can also be easily reached from Vandavasi.

Temple History:

Srimath Ahobila mutt was started by Srimath Aadhivan Sadagopan swamy, who was born almost six hundred and thirty years back, has came forward in constructing lots of temples. In this Aacharya Parampara, Sri Sashta Parankusha swamy, who was the sixth Jeeyar has constructed and helped almost 60 temples and has put in lots of great scholars who are well versed in vedams to maintain those temples. One such sthalam is "Yagnamedu". And as the days progressed, this sthalam is called as "Injimedu". This sthalam is also called as "Yagna vedhikai", as lots of yagnams (Yagams / Homams) are performed in this sthalam for the world peace and for human community.

Avaniyapuram or Dakshina Ahobilam

I just thought of discussing about Avaniyapuram which is also known as Dakshina Ahobilam and is a famous Sri Lakshmi Narasimha hillock temple that is located very near to Tambaram. A few highlights about the temple are:

After ascending about seventy steps, you can find Lord Narasimha sannidhi who is found in a small cave ("Kudavaraik Koil")
After ascending about 114 steps, you can find Lord Venkateswara sannidhi.
At the entrance of the three-tier Rajakopuram you can also find Lord Hanuman.
An exclusive feature of this temple is that even the Lordess has a lioness face.
There are nine narasimhars here and hence also called as Dakshina Ahobilam.
The shrine has deities from the following Pancha (Five) divyadesams -- Kanchi, Srirangam, Sholinghur, Tirumala and Ahobilam. The Lord is said to have obliged Brigu Maharishi by appearing before him in the form of five divyadesa deities.

I have been observing that a number of tour operators are arranging tours to Parikkal, Singiri, Andhili etc. The exact description of Andhili is not available in detail. I hence thought I would do a little research into the same and share out the same here for the benefit of other readers and devotees.

Andhili is located about five kilometers from Thirukoviloor Madhwa Mutt. It is the famous temple of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha. The temple follows the pooja norms of Madhwa. I just thought I would share the photographs sent as email attachments by skyaasoori from Sri Sudharshana Giri for the benefit of all pilgrims and devotees.

Singiri Koil has a sthalapuranam ("temple history") as Sholinghur Narasimhar given darshan to Nandivarma Pallavan at Sri Sudharshana Giri ("Singiri") who was unable to reach Sholinghur in time during Karthigai month. The hillock is located on the banks of Amirtha river.

The temple is managed by Sri Radhakrishna Bhattachariyar who can be reached on the numbers (91)979-183-1808 and (91)948-680-1636. The temple is open from 0900 hours to 1200 hours in the morning and 1630 hours to 1830 hours in the evening. On Saturdays and Sundays, the temple is open from 0900 hours to 1300 hours in the morning and 1630 hours to 1830 hours in the evening. There is no relaxation permissible in the temple timings.

The temple can be reached from Kanniyambadi which is about eight kilometers from the temple. Kanniyambadi is fourteen kilometers from Vellore.

You can reach padavedu temple easily from Polur towards Vellore route. When you reach a village called Santhavaasal, take the left turn and after driving for six kilometers you should be arriving at this temple. There is also a Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Polur hillock, which we have discussed sometime back over here. When you have gone there and are coming here, the enchanting greenery all along and all around would refresh you and eliminate any tiredness besides turning you dynamically vibrant and fresh. The vigraham is swayambu vigraham which came out of the hillock.

The Lordess is seated on the lap of the Lord on the left hand side. The temple is headed by the trust chaired by Sri. Venu Srinivasan of TVS group. The priest by name Sri Mukundan Bhattacharyar is managing the poojas in the temple. The temple is open from 0730 to 1100 in the morning and 1630 to 1830 in the evening. The temple is also sung by 45th HH of Srimad Azhagiya Singer. There is also a Sri Venugopalan temple in the hillock however the approach to that temple is little difficult. That temple is open on Saturdays and specifically saturdays in the month of Purattasi. Sri Maaya Devi who came as sister of Lord Krishna in His incarnation is giving darshan in this village as Sri Renuka Devi in a separate temple.

Whilst casually reading this month edition of Sapthagiri, I came across an article about Sri Prasanna Narasimha Devasthanam temple The idol for this temple was found in Ugra format whilst the board was constructing another temple. To make Him cool down, they have constructed the sanctum sanctorum for Him on a 60 feet deep well. Using the contact number, I have collected the following info for the benefit of other devotees who might be interested to visit the temple:

The 'Thailakappu' is held off only today for New Year and would be put on from tomorrow till January 12.
Due to Dhanur maadha Poojas, the temple timings are 5.30 AM to 10.AM and 5.30 PM to 8 PM. The timings during the normal days are 6 AM to 10.30 AM and 6 PM to 8.30 PM. Precisely, a thirty minutes advancement of the normal schedule applies for the sake of Dhanur maadha Poojas.

I came to learn about a beautiful calendar on Kumbakonam Oppiliappan temple for the year 2009 from Srirangasri Yahoogroups posting over here. Since it had two parts of the calendar, I just thought I would try merging the PDFs into a single one. With the help of MergePDF, I chose to combine them into a single PDF. In this process, I found a few quirks in MergePDF where the upload was getting aborted because the server was unable to take continuous two five mega bytes file though there was a mention about the size being permitted. When I wrote to the webmaster, they corrected the anomalies and wrote me back too.

I sent the calendar as a single file to Sadagopan Mama who posted the message in SrirangaSri and he immediately announced the single file version to everyone. It is advised for the students to recite this sloka every friday before 0630 hours during the Viswaroopa Seva of Sri Sathyanarayana Perumal, West Mambalam in His Mahalakshmi Sannidhi. The sloka needs to be recited twelve times, a quick archana to be performed and then the devotee should come around (circumambulate) the shrine.

I sincerely believe that this weekend, I have been trying to restrict to activities towards serving His devotees in getting with a good collection of song as well to enable them to view the lyrics.

Whenever, I get some time, I normally listen to 'Sriman Narayana' (Annamacharya) song, which I have downloaded from http://www.balaji.net/ Thanks to the website organizers, that they have given this one and a lot of other audio MP3 as free in public domain at the following URL: http://www.balaji.net/mp3/

We all know, MP3 hosting is really expensive and heavy on the server. We should really thank them for the pains they have taken to bear those and supporting us with those melodious names of the Lord. You can actually get the lyrics of this keerthana here. If you closely recall, that we have actually discussed this sometime back over here too.

Today being weekend and sitting in a remote location (Dallas, TX), I just thought I would try creating a Powerpoint with the lyrics and them embed the music to create a video. My objective were the following:

Contribute and support the website http://www.balaji.net/ by adding lyrics to the MP3 which another devotee has helped with.
The weekend should be towards the service to the Lotus feet of the Lord.
People should be able to listen to the music and also by seeing the lyrics, they can also participate in chanting the names of Him. To chant His names gives so much blessings from Him. It is said by elders that the Lord's name has more kindness and potential to save and bless us in all occasions in relation to the Lord Himself.

It should be our everyday practice that in the morning we should always recite some prayers whilst awaking from bed. And if you have been watching the spiritual discourses of Sri Mridul Krishna Maharaj in Sanskar TV, he would advise that before keeping the foot down on the earth, we should ask Mother Earth, Her mercy and pardon since we are walking on Her.
